The Book of Ruth is a story of recovery and progress. It stands in contrast to the preceding book, Judges, which describes a sad pattern of decline on the part of God's earthly people despite the mercy and faithfulness He showed them. Ruth and her Mother-in-law, Naomi, lived thousands of years ago but they teach us a great deal about pleasing God and proving His grace in our lives today. And Boaz, whom God uses to bless them when they arrive in Bethlehem after after their journey from Moab, is a charming picture of the Lord Jesus Christ as our Redeemer. The story closes with joy and blessing as Boaz and Ruth marry. Its last word is the name of their great grandson, David, an even more wonderful picture of Christ as the one in whom God's pleasure and our blessings centre. The writer of this book draws practical lessons from this beautiful story with the aim of encouraging us in the life of faith. May we, like Ruth, glorify God and enjoy together the blessings He bestows on us. - especially as we look forward to the coming of the Lord Jesus to take us home to His Father's house.
