Joel shows us, but in a very restricted way, three purposes of the judgments of God. The Assyrian there is just the rod of God against Judah and Jerusalem, those that have dishonoured Jehovah. Once His purpose has been achieved, God destroys this enemy, because "Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith?" (Isaiah 10:15), and judges, at the same time, all the nations that have come up against Jerusalem (Joel 3). Ultimately, the people enter into the final blessing through the path of repentance.
