The Gift List: If you could have anything in the world, what would it be? Surorisingly, when people think carefully about this, they come up with similar gift lists. Rich or poor, young or old, male or female, the things people really want, are not sold in shops. In fact, they are not material things at all. Almost all thinking people have five basic desires. See if this list includes what you wish you had:
1. Inner peace.
2. A certain hope after death.
3. Making sense of personal suffering.
4. Unconditional love.
5. Knowing the secret of happiness.
There is a special book that promises to provide those five gifts ... all in one package. That book is hte world's all time bestseller, the Bible. Wouldn't it be wonderful if this was really true? The strange thing is, that the people who say it isn't true are the same people who have not put it to the test! But everyone who has received the gift which God offers has found it to be absolutely true. The way to receive this gift is by accepting a fact about ourselves and then making a choice. It seems so simple, but it will not be easy. You will need courage, and be completely honest. The fact is this: we have each failed to meet God's perfect standard. The Bible calls this ¨sin¨, and states: ¨For the wages of sin is death.¨ It should be obvious that we are sinners since we do not even come up to our own standards, let alone God's! We need to see ourselves as God sees us and accept that our situation is hopeless without His special help. This special help is called ¨salvation¨, meaning that God is prepared tp pay for all the damage we have done through our sinning, if we agree with Him about our personal responsibility and accept His amazing plan for our salvation. What is this plan? Two thousand years ago, God's Son willingly gave His life on a cross. He died that horrible death to cover those ¨wages of sin¨ which we had earned. In exchange He offers us ¨the gift of God (which) is eternal life.¨
Do you see the choice you have?
If you agree with God about your sin and receive His Son as your personal Saviour, you will not have to wait until you die to find out if the Bible's promise is true. You will find out right away. Those five things on your list will be yours as part of God's wonderful gift. You can read about these gifts in the Bible in the book of Romans chapter 5 verses 1-11.
Take God at His word. ¨Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.¨ Acts 16.31. In other words, agree with God about your problem - your personal wrong-doing. Then ask His Son to give you His answer to your need - a new kind of life, given as a gift to everyone who will receive Him as Saviour. ¨As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.¨ John1.12
