The first television I ever saw was in 1954. I remember seeing cartoons and professional wrestling. Who would have guessed what greed, lusts, blasphemies, lies and vanities would be programmed and broadcast into our homes in the 90's? The television has gone from being primarily a supplier of information to a "technicolour bilge pump" in just one generation.
It is a sad fact that TV has contributed to the illiteracy of our generation. If Christians did read they would discover that the inventor of the cathode ray tube (television screen) says he wouldn't own a TV! And they would read that Marshall McLuhan said, "If we knew what would be the ultimate outcome of TV, no one would own one." And they would read Neil Postman's book, "Amusing Ourselves to Death", which clearly shows the impact of TV on the church.
A.W. Tozer said about the great god Entertainment, "For centuries the Church stood solidly against every form of worldly entertainment, recognizing it for what it was, a device for wasting time, a refuge from the disturbing voice of conscience, a scheme to divert attention from moral accountability . . ."
Let me encourage you to read this booklet all the way through. It may make you angry. Even angry enough to think. And, if you've watched much TV that might be a new experience.
