The glory of Christ as “the head of the body, the church,” is seen in this letter. There was a danger of the saints “not holding fast to the Head.” The letter is to establish the saints in the truth of the headship of Christ.
Unlike the letter to the Ephesians, where the saints are viewed as “blessed … with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3), the saints in Colosse are viewed as being on the earth. Christ in them is their hope of glory.
