Many year ago, in the city of Edinburgh, a poor ragged little boy stood staring at a painting of the crucifixion of Christ on display in a large shop window. A passer-by noticed the boy’s interest and stopped. “who is that in the painting?” he began to ask. “Why as He on the cross?” he continued. “What is that strange crown on His head?” The boy answered all the questions in great detail, for he knew the whole story well. With a smile and thank you, the questioner pressed a coin into the little lad’s hand and moved on. He had not gone too far before he heard feet running up behind him. Here was the lad quite out of breath, stammering out, “sir, I almost forgot to tell you, and it’s very important! He rose again from the dead!” HE ROSE AGAIN. It is so vital to know that the one who died on the cross for our sin did rise from the dead on the third day. But like the little boy, we often almost forget it. Celebrations at Christmas time are supposed to remind us of the birth of Christ. Sometimes people remember His perfect life, but it is a life of purity which shows us up. Some folks wear a golden cross, perhaps remembering His death, and many still love to sing, “On a hill far way, stood an old rugged cross…” For most, that is the end of the story. But the Bible says, “Remember that Jesus Christ …was raised from the dead” (2 Timothy 2.8) This makes Jesus Christ relevant in the twenty-first century. He is not just a historical figure ranking with Alexander the Great, or Julius Caesar, as some great name from the paste. He died; yes, but He is alive. His Resurrection makes Him our contemporary. This has serious implication for us. There is not doubt that what he taught nearly two thousand year ago has made a permanent impact on the world. But trying to follow His teachings will not take you to heaven. Please do not regard Him as just another prophet or the leader of an ancient religion. He is living Saviour. That is why he came into tis world. He is the son of god, the creator of the universe, yet He chose to come into the world “to save sinners”. (1 Timothy 1.15) The Bible says,” Christ died for our sins…He was buried…He rose again”. (1 Corinthians 15.3) Because He is alive He is “able to save”. (Hebrews 7.25) And you can experience salvation from sin and its penalty by putting your faith in Him. Faith involves believing in your heart that God raised from the dead. (Romans 10.9) The resurrection showed God’s satisfaction with the sacrifice of Christ. When you believe it in your heart, you are saying, “if the work of Christ on the cross satisfied God, it is sufficient to save me.” That step of faith makes you right with God and will take you to heaven. Take that step right now! J Hay
