“They found not the body of the Lord Jesus”. (Luke 24.3) What a remarkable scene that was on that first Easter morning! A few devoted women had left Jerusalem early in the morning to visit the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth. He had been their Master and Lord, but He was dead, and had been buried rather hastily because of the approaching Jewish Sabbath. Two friends had taken His body down from the cross and wrapped it in fine linen with myrrh and aloes between the folds and had gently laid Him in a garden tomb just outside the city walls. Now with the Sabbath past, these women were coming to anoint Him with fragrant spices. They had a problem however. The great stone rolled across the door of the Tomb would be too heavy for them to move. Who would help them at this early hour? As they approached the tomb, the first rays of sunlight were streaking across the sky heralding the first day of another week. What a sight met their eyes, what thoughts and questions filled their minds as they saw the great stone already rolled out of its place, the way into the tomb was open was open to their view. Who had been here before them? Had thieves rifled the tomb? With fear and bewilderment they cautiously entered. It was empty, and says Luke the respected historian, “They found not the body”. They had come to anoint him, but where was He? Had someone taken the body? Why? Where? They were perplexed. It was an angelic messenger who answered their questions saying, “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here but is risen”. (Luke 24.5,6) He was alive just as He had told hem when they were with Him in Galilee, and they remembered His words. But the empty tomb and the resurrection of Jesus Christ have important and far reaching Implication for all of us. First, His resurrection proves that all the claims He made have been vindicated. He is the Son of God, the Lord from Heaven, and the Saviour of all who believe in Him. His triumph over death proves He is all that He said he was! Second, His resurrection is the pledge that His sacrificial death at Calvary has satisfied the claims of God against sin, making it possible for God now to offer forgiveness to all who accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour, trusting entirely in Him. Third, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is God’s firm assurance to all men that one day there will be a judgement. Preaching in the city of Athens, the Apostle Paul declared, “God hath appointed a day, in the witch He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom he hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the Dead”. (Acts 17.31) Today we look back to that first Easter morning and those who have trusted Jesus Christ as Saviour we rejoice that “they found not the body”. For those who have never trusted Him, the offer of salvation is still extended to them. The awful alternative of a day of judgement for those who refuse Him is solemn beyond belief. Why not trust Him as your Saviour Today? Jim Flanigan
